OpenShift Virtualization Accelerator-Package

This offer helps you assess, plan, and prepare your virtualization migration journey using OpenShift Virtualization and KubeVirt — ideal for platform teams ...

Description

The goal of the OpenShift Virtualization Accelerator Package is to accelerate the adoption of Kubernetes-based virtualization for customers. Upon completion of the Accelerator Package, you will have:

  • A tailored virtualization strategy aligned with your business goals and prepared to enhance your efficiency.
  • A trained and empowered team with hands-on experience in OpenShift Virtualization, capable of independently managing and expanding Kubernetes-based virtualization.
  • A proof-of-concept (PoC) environment that has been built and tested, serving as a safe playground for ongoing experiments and training.
  • A clear migration roadmap that identifies prioritized workloads and a structured approach for a smooth, effective migration.
  • Improved resource utilization and cost savings with an optimized platform supporting both container and VM workloads.
  • An alternative to Broadcom with Kubernetes-based virtualization, enabling flexibility and independence from proprietary solutions.

Phase 1 - Discovery

  • Understanding the customer's current environment, processes, and goals to align OpenShift Virtualization with the business strategy.
Analysis of the existing infrastructure, including aspects like compute, network, and storage. This also involves reviewing existing virtualization environments as well as on-premises or cloud setups.
  • Building an understanding of how teams, processes, and methods interact with current technology. Identifying roles, workflows, and potential areas where OpenShift Virtualization could add value.
  • Defining success criteria: Establishing success criteria for the organization regarding scalability, cost savings, and operational efficiency.Defining the architecture: Specifying the ideal architecture with details on compute requirements, network configurations, and storage options. This architecture serves as the foundational roadmap for the next phases.

Phase 2 - Team Enablement and PoC

  • Training the team with foundational OpenShift Virtualization knowledge and setting up a proof-of-concept (PoC) platform for practical experience.
  • OpenShift Virtualization Fundamentals: Conducting training focused on the fundamentals of OpenShift Virtualization so the team understands the basics of Kubernetes-based virtualization tailored to customer needs.
  • OpenShift Virtualization Architecture and Strategy: Overview of how OpenShift Virtualization fits into the infrastructure, with emphasis on integration, best practices, and guidelines.
  • PoC Environment: Setting up a dedicated PoC platform in the customer's preferred environment, whether on-premises or in a public cloud. This setup allows the team to explore OpenShift Virtualization features and safely test workloads and various configurations.
  • Hands-on Training: Scenarios that allow the team to apply what they've learned and explore tasks such as creating or migrating virtual machines, managing resources, and testing different configurations within the PoC.

Phase 3 - Workload Assessment and Migration Planning

  • Developing a structured approach for workload migration with a focus on identifying high-impact workloads and developing an actionable migration plan.
  • Workload Categorization: Collaborating with the team to identify the "low-hanging fruits" for migration, typically those with high impact but low complexity. Workloads are categorized based on factors like compatibility, migration effort, and expected savings.
  • Effort and Impact Analysis: Evaluating the potential operational impact and required migration effort. This matrix helps prioritize workloads and develop a phased migration approach that offers quick wins and clear cost-benefit insights.
  • Developing a Migration Roadmap: Creating a migration plan that outlines the sequence and method for transitioning workloads into the OpenShift Virtualization environment. The roadmap includes timelines, resource requirements, risk analyses, and alternatives to ensure a smooth migration.
  • Advice on Next Steps: Concluding the engagement with a strategic review, including proposed next steps, ongoing support options, and a rough plan for full deployment.
